300+ Atlanta Rowers Raise Over $47,000 for Row for the Cure™ - And They’re Not Done Yet

St Andrew Rowing Club, Atlanta Junior Rowing Association, Atlanta Rowing Club, and Georgia State rowed 12 hours for cancer research fundraiser

Roswell, GA, September 29, 2008 – High school, collegiate, and adult rowers from throughout metro Atlanta gathered on September 20th, 2008 in Roswell’s Azalea Park to row 8-man, 4-man, double and single shells, raising over $47,000 to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure – and the teams are not stopping now. These 300+ rowers, representing Atlanta’s two youth rowing organizations – Saint Andrew Rowing Club and Atlanta Junior Rowing Association – as well as Georgia State’s crew team and the Atlanta Rowing Club, have extended the fundraising effort through the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, November 1-2, 2008.

A surprise guest at the river was Lindsay Shoop, 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning rower from the US Womens 8+ team.  Lindsay rowed at the University of Virginia along with Atlanta Junior Rowing Association women’s coach Julie McQueen.. Shoop began rowing just 6 years ago, and continues to train with the US National Team.

“What a fabulous day for cancer research and for our rowers,” said Amber Powell, Board Member at Saint Andrew Rowing Club and Chair of the Row for the Cure event. “Last year was our first year and we raised $30,000 between two clubs, so not only did we increase the total amount raised but we further spread the desire for our organizations to get involved in community service. And of course it was a great opportunity to see an Olympic Gold Medalist up close -- the rowers were inspired, and thrilled to meet her.”

Rowers will continue to gather pledges until November 1st and they encourage any and all community members to participate with them by supporting their fundraising efforts.

About Komen for the Cure Foundation

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, the foundation has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill their promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
